Founded in 1970 as the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) is one of three academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies) in the United States. Operating under the 1863 Congressional charter of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academies are private, nonprofit institutions that work outside of government to provide objective advice on matters of science, technology, and health.
Mission: To improve health for all by advancing science, accelerating health equity, and providing independent, authoritative, and trusted advice nationally and globally.

Happening Now: NAM Healthy Longevity Catalyst Awards
The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) is accepting applications for NAM Healthy Longevity Catalyst Awards January 13 through February 24, 2020, through the website of the American Federation for Aging Research. A 2-page application is all it takes to be considered for one of up to 24 awards worth $50,000 each plus travel to the 2021 Innovator Summit in Washington, DC.
Individuals and teams residing in the United States are invited to submit applications detailing bold, innovative, and potentially transformative ideas to improve the mental, physical, and social well-being of people as they age. Applications may originate from any field or combination of fields and may focus on any stage of life, as long as they ultimately promote health as people age.
The NAM Healthy Longevity Catalyst Awards are part of the Healthy Longevity Global Competition. Launched in October 2019 by the NAM and global collaborators representing over 40 countries and territories, the goal of this multiyear, multi-million-dollar international competition is to accelerate breakthroughs in healthy longevity through a series of monetary awards and prizes. Ultimately, one or more Grand Prizes of up to $5 million will be awarded for the achievement of a transformative innovation.
The NAM Healthy Longevity Catalyst Awards are funded by Johnson & Johnson Innovation (JJI). Catalyst Award winners will be considered for additional support from JJI in later phases of the competition.
Now is the time to achieve breakthroughs in healthy longevity and unlock the opportunities aging has to offer.
The Healthy Longevity Global Grand Challenge:
Launched in 2019 by the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, the Healthy Longevity Global Grand Challenge is an international initiative to extend the human healthspan by accelerating research, innovation and entrepreneurship in healthy longevity. The initiative aims to 1) comprehensively address the challenges and opportunities presented by global population aging; 2) catalyze breakthrough ideas and research that will extend the human healthspan; 3) generate transformative and scalable innovations worldwide; 4) and build a broad ecosystem of support by enabling scientists, engineers, innovators, entrepreneurs, health leaders, policy makers, and the public to work together to achieve the promise of healthy longevity.
The Global Grand Challenge has two parts:
The Global Roadmap for Healthy Longevity will assemble an independent International Commission to author an evidence-based report with recommendations for societies worldwide to foster healthy longevity by through strategies related to the social and behavioral enablers of health, health care and public health systems, and science and technology. The Commission’s work will be informed by three public workshops, the first of which was held in Washington, DC, in November 2019. The Commission’s final report is expected in late 2020.
The Healthy Longevity Global Competition is a multiyear, multi-million-dollar international competition that will accelerate breakthroughs in healthy longevity through a series of monetary awards and prizes. The competition is open to innovators of any background, including science, medicine, public health, technology, entrepreneurship, public policy, social engineering, and beyond. The competition launched in October 2019.
