LONGEVITY & EQUITY IN THE AGE OF PANDEMICS
Life expectancy has increased steadily in the United States over the last century, but advances in longer life have not been distributed evenly. The gap in life expectancy among the wealthy and the poor in America has grown substantially larger over time, and differences in life expectancy between whites, blacks and Latinos remain significant. And many of the same challenges on access to healthcare, the impact of joblessness and stress, and access to education are also at work in the current coronavirus crisis.
On April 27, 2020, the Longevity Project, in collaboration with the Stanford Center on Longevity, held their first virtual panel discussion on longevity and equity. The panel included leading experts in the space: Amani Allen, Executive Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Community Health Sciences at UC Berkley; Dr. Hayes-Bautista, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at UCLA; and Richard Johnson, Director of the Program on Retirement Policy at the Urban Institute.
