RETHINKING RETIREMENT IN THE AGE OF PANDEMICS
The coronavirus pandemic, market gyrations, and economic dislocation has brought new uncertainties to retirement planning, especially for those near or already in retirement. Americans are facing an unpredictable economic and social future and many are asking difficult questions in the face of this new disruptive environment: should I adjust my retirement plan and if so how, should I (and can I) change my age of retirement, what will the economic downturn do to my retirement savings, and how should I think about family health care needs in a time of increased risk.
On May 7 2020, the Longevity Project, in collaboration with the Stanford Center on Longevity, held a virtual panel discussion on Rethinking Retirement in the Age of Pandemics to discuss how individuals should be responding to our new financial and health care situation. The panel took place on Zoom from 11:30 to 12:45 p.m. PST and was composed of leading experts including Steve Vernon, a Consulting Research Scholar at the Stanford Center on Longevity; Sri Reddy, the Senior Vice President for Retirement and Income Solutions at Principal Financial Group; and Kim Ta, Head of Client Service and Advice at Wells Fargo Advisors (WFA).
The panelists along with the moderator, Ken Stern, Chair of the Longevity Project, discussed the evolution of best practices in light of coronavirus and took questions on rethinking retirement in this new age.
